The Biology Undergraduate Scholars Program Honors Research (BUSP-HR) is a one year professional development program for students who want to make the most of their undergraduate experience by participating in faculty-mentored research.
Outstanding junior and senior undergraduates, including transfer students, are invited to apply for this research-based honors program that is both selective and highly participatory. Students who did not participate in the lower division BUSP program are eligible to apply.
The central activity of BUSP-HR is the biological research experience. Participants conduct faculty-supervised, full-time research in a UCD campus laboratory during the summer and continue as part-time researchers during the academic year.
The summer portion of the program - sponsored by the National Institutes of Health – Initiative for Maximizing Student Development - consists of ten weeks of full-time (40 hours/week) intensive laboratory research, plus weekly group meetings to learn about and practice the scientific process. The meetings are devoted to developing scientific skills such as analysis and critical evaluation of primary scientific literature, hypothesis testing and negation, data collection and statistical analysis, and oral and written research presentation techniques. During the summer, students receive a stipend of $3,420.
Academic-year research consists of 10-to-15 hours per week in the laboratory. Additionally, the weekly group meetings continue as a BIS 198 class devoted to building scientific and academic skills. This includes reading and analyzing scientific papers, writing fellowship applications and abstracts, further development of research presentation skills, and information about how to apply to graduate school. In Spring Quarter, each student will present his/her research findings at the UC Davis Undergraduate Research & Creative Activities Conference, and will be strongly encouraged to present their research at regional and national meetings.
* Students who cannot participate in the summer portion of BUSP-Honors may be able to participate in the academic year program if slots are available. It is advisable to contact the program director and submit an application as early as possible.
