Event Date
Join us to learn how College of Biological Sciences researchers at Bodega Marine Lab are advancing our understanding of biodiversity, climate resilience, and ecosystem health—and how these discoveries are informing marine conservation and responses to environmental change locally and around the globe.
Research at the world-renowned UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory (BML) is both unique and essential. California’s coasts are a powerhouse for both the economy and the environment, generating trillions in economic activity while supporting the California Current, one of the world’s most productive coastal ecosystems. BML sits at the heart of this ecosystem, where nutrient-rich waters fuel extraordinary biological diversity and enable scientific discoveries that deepen our understanding of ocean ecosystems, inform conservation and resource management, and help us adapt to a rapidly changing world.
Featuring presentations by:
Jay Stachowicz, Distinguished Professor and Robert and Rosabel Osborne Endowed Chair in Evolution and Ecology
Professor Stachowicz studies why biodiversity varies in marine systems and how that diversity influences ecosystem health—from seagrass meadows to invertebrate communities, biological invasions, and the power of species interactions.
Anya Brown, Assistant Professor of Evolution and Ecology
Professor Brown investigates how eel grass and coral reefs handle stress and change. Combining field studies, lab experiments, and molecular tools, she studies how differences between species, including the tiny microbes they live with, affect how they survive and interact.
Moderated by:
Andrea Alfaro, Director, Coastal and Marine Sciences Institute; Professor of Animal Science
Dr. Alfaro leads interdisciplinary efforts to address critical challenges facing our oceans, including climate change, marine diseases, sustainable seafood production, and coastal resilience. Her work brings together scientists, industry, communities, and policymakers to find practical solutions for a more sustainable ocean.
About the Series:
Under the Microscope invites the public into the lab to meet the scientists, researchers, and experts driving discovery at every level of life on Earth. From breakthroughs in cancer biology and treatment to insights into how parental involvement shapes offspring behavior, each event features engaging conversations with leading UC Davis experts whose work is transforming our understanding of life.
