Position Title
Professor
- Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior
- Entomology and Nematology (Chair)
Research Interests
Joanna C. Chiu studies the molecular and cellular mechanisms that regulate circadian and seasonal biology, as well as on invasive species genomics. Her laboratory investigates how endogenous biological clocks enable insects to adapt to daily and seasonal environmental changes, with particular emphasis on post-transcriptional and post-translational regulation of circadian rhythms and the integration of environmental and metabolic signals. The Chiu Lab also applies genomic approaches to understand insect invasion biology and the development of insecticide resistance, with the goal of informing new strategies for sustainable pest management.
Chiu has received numerous honors for her research, including the NIH Pathway to Independence Award and the Entomological Society of America’s Physiology, Biochemistry, and Toxicology Research Award. She is president-elect of the Society for Research on Biological Rhythms and a Fellow elected in 2025.
