Event Date
Susan R. Wessler, Neil A. and Rochelle A. Campbell Presidential Chair for Innovations in Science Education; Distinguished Professor of Genetics, University of California, Riverside; Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor
An elected member of the National Academy of Sciences (1998), Wessler served as its Home Secretary from 2011 to 2023 and currently serves as NAS Vice President. Wessler is a leading plant molecular geneticist whose research has transformed understanding of transposable elements and their role in gene and genome evolution. Her laboratory pioneered computational approaches to identify and analyze transposable elements in plant genomes and discovered miniature inverted repeat transposable elements (MITEs), now recognized as the transposon most frequently associated with plant genes. In addition to her research contributions, she has been a national leader in science education, developing the Dynamic Genome program to engage undergraduates in authentic research experiences.
