College of Biological Sciences graduate students are eligible and able to apply for several awards and scholarships, which provide additional financial support in recognition of excellence in mentoring, teaching and research, and support a variety of student life opportunities.
- Alys Hay Travel Award
- The Alys Hay Travel Award supports both undergraduate and graduate student travel, to allow participation in unique opportunities that include conferences, workshops, courses, and other academic or professional ventures that help advance their skills, knowledge, and/or professional network.
Alys Hay Travel Award Application - Barbara Chapman Neuroscience Award
- The Barbara Chapman Neuroscience Award provides support for Neuroscience Graduate Program students to attend conferences, workshops, courses and formal or informal practical training or internship opportunities to advance their knowledge and skills applicable to their thesis research. This award is open to students at any level of training. Applications are announced via email when they open.
- Barbara Horwitz & John Horowitz Molecular, Cellular and Integrative Physiology Award
- This award was endowed through a generous gift from Barbara Horwitz & John Horowitz and recognizes an outstanding graduate student in the Molecular, Cellular, and Integrative Physiology Graduate Group, and is applied towards travel and/or supplies. Maximum award is $2,000. To be eligible, applicants must be full-time registered graduate students in good academic standing in the MCIP graduate group, in their second year or beyond, with a minimum GPA of 3.5.
Barbara Horwitz & John Horowitz Molecular, Cellular and Integrative Physiology Award Application and More Information - Dan and Sharon Riggs Microbiology and Molecular Genetics Graduate Support*
- Provides support for graduate students conducting research in the labs of faculty members in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, as well as to enhance the graduate student experience and related activities in the department.
- Daphne and Ted Pengelley Endowment for Research in Evolutionary Biology**
- This award is chosen by recommendation of the CPB director and an appointed committee of faculty in evolutionary biology.
- David L. Weaver Award
- The David L. Weaver Award provides financial support to one or more UC Davis neuroscience graduate student(s), postdoctoral scholar(s), and/or early-career faculty to attend conferences and other scientific events that help advance their knowledge and research training in the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of stroke and traumatic brain injuries. - Dean's Mentorship Award
- This award was made possible through donations to the CBS Dean’s Innovation Fund and recognizes graduate students who have demonstrated excellence in the mentorship of undergraduate students. This award provides $2,500 to the selected graduate students and an additional $2,500 to the student’s laboratory to support the research experience of undergraduates being mentored by that graduate student. This award is by faculty nomination only.
Dean's Mentorship Award Application and More Information - Debbie and Rick Yaver Graduate Student Support Fund
- This fund will provide support to students in any of the eight College of Biological Sciences graduate groups (Animal Behavior; Plant Biology; Neuroscience; Population Biology; Molecular, Cellular and Integrative Physiology; Integrative Genetics and Genomics; Biophysics; and Biochemistry, Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology) who are also mentored by a major professor in the College of Biological Sciences.
- Dr. Irving Hertzendorf Memorial Fund**
- This award is presented annually to an exceptional Ph.D. student in the Molecular, Cellular, and Integrative Physiology Graduate Group, to recognize the full range of scholarly attributes, including completion of a significant research project.
- Dr. Ronald J. Smith Distinguished Teaching Fellow in Quantitative Bio
- The Dr. Ronald J. Smith Distinguished Teaching Fellow in Quantitative Biology supports undergraduate teaching by graduate students, who are recognized for their excellent scholarship and potential as future leaders and teachers in quantitative biology.
- Dr. Stacey Harmer and Dr. Julin N. Maloof Distinguished Graduate Fellowship*
- This Fellowship supports one or more graduate students annually, who is working in the lab of a faculty member in the Department of Plant Biology. Eligible student(s) must be nominated by the Plant Biology, Integrated Genetics and Genomics, or Biochemistry, Molecular, Cellular and Development Biology Graduate Group. Funding is renewable and ideally will follow the student for no more than six years.
- Elsie Taylor Stocking Fellowship in Plant Physiology
- The Elsie Taylor Stocking Fellowship in Plant Physiology, which was established in 1992 by the late Professor Emeritus of Botany, C. Ralph Stocking in memory of his wife. The fellowship is awarded to a graduate student specializing in plant physiology. Inquire with the Department of Plant Biology for more information about this award and its application process.
- Eric and Louise Conn Graduate Student Award in Plant Biochemistry
- This award was endowed through a generous gift from Eric and Louise Conn and supports outstanding graduate students performing research in the field of plant biochemistry. One or more $2,000 annual fellowships will be awarded. To be eligible, applicants must be full-time registered graduate students in good academic standing in the Plant Biology or the Biochemistry and Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology Graduate Groups, and working with faculty mentors in the College of Biological Sciences.

- Irving I. Hertzendorf Memorial Award
- The Irving I. Hertzendorf Memorial Award was created to honor the life of Irving I. Hertzendorf, a graduate student in Physiology. This $500 award is presented annually to an exceptional Ph.D. student in the Molecular, Cellular, and Integrative Physiology Graduate Group, to recognize the full range of scholarly attributes, including completion of a significant research project. - Jack Major Memorial Award
- The Jack Major Memorial Award recognizes excellence in the study of plant biology, and supports student field research in botany, especially in the areas of plant ecology, plant systematics, or plant geography. The award is annual, and given to either an undergraduate or graduate student. Application are not required. Awards are given at the discretion of the UC Davis Botanical Society.
- Joyce Ann Huang Graduate Fellowship in Biological Sciences**
- Named in honor of Joyce Huang, who had an incredible journey as a graduate student in the Molecular, Cellular and Integrative Physiology (MCIP) graduate program in the College of Biological Sciences, this Fellowship supports graduate students in MCIP.
- Karen Sigvardt, Ph.D. Neuroscience Award
- This Award provides travel grants to graduate students in the Center for Neuroscience, who exemplifies UC Davis’s Principles of Community and are engaged in efforts that create a vibrant, inclusive academic community where all individuals can thrive. - The Karen Sigvardt Ph.D. Neuroscience Fellowship was established by Audrey Webb in memory of Professor Sigvardt, a faculty of the UC Davis Center for Neuroscience. - Larry and Charlotte Mitich Memorial Fund
- The Larry and Charlotte Mitich Memorial Fund supports field research in botany, especially in the areas of plant ecology, plant systematics, or horticulture. - Ling-Lie Chau Graduate Student Award for Brain Research
- The Ling-Lie Chau Graduate Student Award for Brain Research supports high-achieving Neuroscience Graduate Program graduate students, who have passed all qualification requirements and who are performing research within a core CNS lab, to enhance the educational experience and attract quality candidates for future graduate student recruitment. - Loren D. Carlson Prize in Physiology
- This prize honors the contributions of Loren D. Carlson, former Chair of the Physiology Graduate Group. The $3,000 annual prize honors one student in the Molecular, Cellular, and Integrative Physiology Graduate Group who has demonstrated "scholarly achievement and promise for teaching and research." To be eligible, students must have advanced to candidacy, or completed their Ph.D. the year prior. This award is by faculty nomination only.
- Maureen Stanton Graduate Student Award*
- This award supports graduate student research dedicated to understanding the evolution and ecology of populations, species, communities and ecosystems. The graduate student pool of applicants can be drawn from PhD students who are academically supervised and working in the research group of an EVE faculty member, or who is pursuing a PhD from the Population Biology Graduate Group (PBGG).
- Monsanto Fellowship in Agricultural Biotechnology
- This Fellowship was endowed through a generous gift from the Monsanto Corporation and is available to outstanding CBS graduate students preparing for careers in agricultural biotechnology. To be eligible, applicants shall have declared the intention to pursue a career in agricultural biotechnology. Applicants must be full-time registered graduate students in one of the eight CBS graduate groups.

- The Richard G. Coss Wildlife Research Award was established in 2015 to support graduate students doing field research in the Animal Behavior Graduate Group, and who demonstrate financial need and have limited grant opportunities. - Simon Chan Memorial Fellowship
- The Simon Chan Memorial Fellowship was established in memory of Associate Professor Chan whose work on plant breeding promised to help some of the world’s poorest people. The fellowship supports graduate students in the Department of Plant Biology. This award is administered by the Department of Plant Biology. - Walter R. and Roselinde H. Russell Graduate Fellowship in Plant Biology
- The Walter R. and Roselinde H. Russell Graduate Fellowship in Plant Biology, which was established in 1996 in memory and honor of the distinguished career of Botanist Walter R. Russell.
