Curriculum
BUSP is a two year program and requires a two year commitment, including two weeks during September before the start of the sophomore year. Students accepted into BUSP enroll in a balanced program of rigorous coursework that has been developed specifically for students interested in pursuing biology degrees.
The curriculum has two universal components (Academic and Advising), which all students participate in, and one supplemental component (Research). To participate in the supplemental research component, BUSP students must submit an application at the end of winter quarter during their freshman year.
Academic Component (Universal)
Freshman Year
Mathematics and chemistry form the core of the first-year curriculum for all BUSP students. BUSP students must complete the BUSP Chemistry Intensive course in the fall prior to taking CHE 2A in winter quarter. BUSP students enroll in special co-classes that supplement regular math and chemistry courses. All classes emphasize working in small groups for problem-solving and study-skills that carry-over into later years. Students also enroll in BIS 11 (which prepares them for success at UC Davis, including in Introductory Biology, and exposes them to research opportunities), and a lab skills course that prepares them for a research internship.
Summer Following Freshman Year
In the month of September, BUSP students participate in a special Biology Boot Camp workshop (no fees and available to all BUSP students). This workshop is designed to enhance their performance in Introductory Biology.
Sophomore Year
Students enroll in Introductory Biology in the fall, and also participate in small study groups and Biology Problem Solving Workshops that offer course-related expertise. They complete the Introductory Chemistry Series and participate in co-Organic Chemistry workshops to support their success in the Organic Chemistry Series.
BUSP students meet regularly with a BUSP staff advisor throughout their freshman and sophomore years. The advisor offers academic advice as well as personal advice. The former includes course planning, guidance regarding course-load, and graduation planning. BUSP students also meet with BUSP peer advisors for additional support.
Research Component (Supplemental)
Working in a research laboratory provides students with the opportunity to experience first-hand the exciting research programs at UC Davis, as well as the opportunity to interact with faculty, graduate students and advanced undergraduates who are actively involved in research.
During their sophomore year, students register for a year-long seminar course designed to enhance scientific skills and professional development. The course includes presentations by guest speakers from science-based professions and campus resource units.
